When we first came across Himalayan Hermitage, we were immediately struck by the quiet beauty of their rugs and throws - not just in their design, but in the story woven into every piece. Founded by Sisse and Alex d’Artois in 2017, Himalayan Hermitage was born from a deep respect for Nepal’s centuries old craft of weaving, and a wish to share it with the world in a way that feels both timeless and modern.
Their collection is created in collaboration with household weavers across the Kathmandu Valley, where each rug and throw is made by hand, from start to finish, in the comfort of the artisans’ homes. It’s this deeply personal process - slow, intentional, and human - that makes every piece so special.
At SALT, we care about where things come from and the hands that make them. Himalayan Hermitage’s work reflects that beautifully. Every purchase not only brings an object of quiet luxury into your home, but also supports families and preserves a lineage of craftsmanship that is disappearing in the face of industrial production and synthetic materials.
Their approach to social sustainability resonates deeply with us. They’re not just producing textiles - they’re building a bridge between heritage and modern living, between maker and collector. The brand works directly with artisan families, ensuring fair employment and dignity in their work, while using natural, sustainably sourced fibres that respect the environment as much as they do tradition.
We carry Himalayan Hermitage because their pieces embody what we believe in: thoughtful design, honest materials, and a story worth telling. Each rug or throw is a reminder that beauty lies not just in what we see, but in the hands, history, and heart behind it.
