Sumum FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Product Range
What switch styles are available?
Sumum offers four unique switch styles to suit a variety of design aesthetics:
1. Round switch
2. Pin switch
3. Square switch
4. Hexagonal switch
How many buttons can be installed on a single plate?
Single plates support 1–5 buttons.
Double plates (also known as double modules) can accommodate up to 10 buttons.
Triple plates are technically possible but less common.
Are there size limitations for the faceplates?
The standard faceplate size is 125mm x 85mm.
Single plates are the norm, while double plates are often used in North America for 4-gang boxes.
Can the position of the buttons be customized?
Yes. Button positioning is fully customizable. For example:
- On a 5-button switch, positions A–E are available.
- On a 6-button switch, positions U, V, and Z can be selected for asymmetrical or offset layouts.
What finishes are available?
Sumum offers a range of finishes, including a newly added Blue Steel option. The complete finish offering is evolving based on design preferences from the North American market.
Can I add custom engraving to the switch plates?
Yes. Engraving is available for both text and icons, and can be placed above, below, or beside buttons—up to 1mm from the edge of the plate.
Technical Specifications
Are Sumum switches approved for use in North America?
Yes. All Sumum switches and outlets are ETL-certified for use in North America.
What voltage do Sumum switches use?
Switches: Low voltage (typically 30V)
Outlets: Line voltage (110V for North America)
How do the switches function within an electrical system?
Sumum switches use potential-free contact technology. When pressed, they send a signal to drivers or relays in the electrical cabinet, which then activate the connected device or lighting.
Are Sumum switches compatible with smart home systems?
Yes. Sumum switches work with both smart and non-smart systems, providing flexible integration options.
Installation
What’s needed to install Sumum switches in new construction?
You will need the following:
1. Standard electrical boxes
2. Back plates
3. Mud rings (based on drywall thickness)
4. Low voltage wiring to each switch location
Can Sumum switches be installed in existing homes?
Retrofitting is a frequently requested feature. Sumum is actively working on a dedicated retrofit solution, with plans to launch in the near future.
What’s the standard drywall setup for installation?
Typically, two ¼-inch mud rings are used, totaling a ½-inch depth. However, other options are available for different wall thicknesses.
How does Sumum differ from Mata in terms of installation?
Sumum uses a spring mechanism and is designed to be mounted inside traditional electrical boxes.
Mata switches mount magnetically and can be installed flush into the wall or over existing boxes using specialized rings.
Wiring
How many wires are required per switch?
Non-smart systems:
- 1 switch: 2 wires
- 2 switches: 3 wires
- 4 switches: 4 wires
- 5 switches: 5 wires
Smart systems:
- Typically 2 wires per switch
- Additional wires may be required based on button count (up to 8 wires total)
What’s the difference in wiring between smart and non-smart systems?
Non-smart systems: Each switch runs independently back to the driver cabinet.
Smart systems: Switches can be daisy-chained, reducing wiring complexity and allowing centralized control.
Functionality
How do you dim lights with Sumum switches?

Release, then press and hold again to dim down
A quick press will toggle the light on or off
Is there any delay with smart system integration?

Can switches control devices other than lights?
Absolutely. Sumum switches can be programmed to control:
- Curtains
- Projection screens
- Music systems
- Climate controls
- Predefined scenes
